The Birth of Heraldry
Shields were
decorated to identify their owners. From about 1150 knights wore helmets that
covered their faces. This gave extra protection, but meant that nobody could
recognise them. So that knights would know friend from enemy, they began to
paint heraldic designs on their shields, each knight having his own unique
pattern.
