Prehistoric Greece

The modern country of Greece covers only a part of the area that in ancient times was inhabited by the Greeks. The ancient Greeks spread over much of what is now southern Italy, Turkey and lands around the Black Sea as well.

In prehistoric times, most of the higher mountains were covered with dense forests of oak, pine and ash. Today they are covered by grass or scrubby bushes.

Humans have lived in Greece for about half a million years. People belonging to the same species as modern humans arrived in Greece about 75,000 years ago.
